Supermodel Beverly Peele hosted the Club Pink Ribbon benefit party for singer Anastacia's breast cancer research fund on Wednesday night at the exclusive Moroccan-inspired Spider Club in Hollywood.
Affable, long-haired, strikingly tall and wearing a flowing green camisole she lightheartedly said "cost about $12" at a mall, Peele spoke about her aunt, who died of breast cancer six years ago. The model, whose father died of prostate and lung cancer two years ago, also introduced a young cancer survivor.
"I am so thankful to Anastacia for spreading her message of early detection." said 27-year-old Whitney Carr, who discovered she had breast cancer after watching a television special with the singer, who was diagnosed in 2003. Tickets, at $75 a piece, went towards the Anastacia Fund at the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
The evening's tone, however, remained life-affirming and definitely sassy despite the benefit's serious and significant subject matter.
Tattooed Velvet Margarita club owner and DJ Big Daddy Carlos, wearing a tank top declaring "Diva Bitch," spun a feisty set of hip-hop, disco and New Wave tunes. Attendees danced, ate grilled vegetable skewers and sucked on beer and wine while lounging on lush ottomans.
In line with a brief fashion show of Cynthia Rowley designs, talk turned to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Los Angeles.
"L.A. Fashion Week is very boring," admitted Peele, sitting with her sister and husband. "They don't have the financial backing to bring in the top models. You're not going to get a great show."
Peele said she was only going to attend two shows, including flirty clothing line Single on Friday night, the day of her 30th birthday
.
"A couple of the designers, like Single, I would do for nothing because I really like their clothes," she said of normally walking the runway for high-rolling industry-standard compensation. "But everybody has to begin somewhere, and they do have great ideas and great clothing out here. More power to LA designers."
Actor Vince Vaughn, yards away from Beverly Peele, lent his own style and spirit to the night. The "Swingers" stud and co-star of "Old School" and "Be Cool;" wore a casual trucker hat and plaid shirt, and towered above his lady cohorts and friends.
As Big Daddy Carlos DJ-ed sensitive pop hit "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure, Vaughn and his "Swingers" buddy Patrick Van Horn snaked through the crowd, singing along and dancing, literally, out of the club.
Their exit marked an almost definitive end to the party. But with gift bags including Joico hair products and Jane Iredale make-up, everyone left with something on Wednesday night.
